The Ohio House of Representatives passed a bill through that would ban abortion at six weeks, now legislation is being considered by Republicans that would ban abortion completely and make the procedure punishable by life in prison or even the death penalty.
House Bill 565 allows no exceptions for abortion in cases of rape, incest, or danger to a woman’s life. Under the law, abortion would be punishable under the Ohio criminal code. So a woman who receives an abortion and the doctors who perform the procedure could face criminal penalties, from prison to capital punishment.
The bill is unlikely to be voted on this year. It is the latest in a string of anti-choice bills drafted in Ohio and other states. The bill which passed the House last week was previously vetoed by Ohio’s governor.
