Canadian authorities have arrested Meng Wanzhou, the CFO of Chinese tech company Huawei, at the request of US authorities. Huawei is a major global technology company, but it isn’t as well known in the U.S. since most of its products aren’t sold there. Meng is now awaiting extradition to the US from Canada.
The Chinese embassy has spoken out against the arrest. Following the arrest, the Chinese embassy and Huawei called for the release of Wanzhou, who is the daughter of the company’s founder Ren Zhengfei.
Huawei’s expansion from China into the wider world has alarmed Western governments and corporations. US corporations have close ties to government and military, similarly, Huwaei has close ties to Chinese authorities. The majority of criticism has surrounded Huawei’s growing influence on global communications in the coming years.
Huawei has denied allegations it is involved in the collection of intelligence for the Chinese government.
