Yellow Vest Movement Defies Government, 5th Week of Demonstrations

The yellow vest movement has gathered in Paris and cities around France for a fifth consecutive Saturday of demonstrations. Thousands of riot police with armored cars ready confronted the peaceful protesters fired water cannons and tear gas at demonstrators on the Champs-Elysees and adjacent streets. Nearly 300 demonstrators were arrested in Paris.

Despite a government call to suspend the actions, the Strasbourg shooting and multiple concessions from the government; cancelling the tax hike and a minimum wage increase, more than 4,000 took to the streets in Paris. Peaceful protesters in Paris were outnumbered by riot police 2 to 1.

Across the country, more than 65,000 people took part in demonstrations, up against nearly 70,000 police.

The Yellow Vest movement was sparked by a hike in fuel taxes, but has grown to address many other issues, and widespread anger with the government. The movement has spread to other countries, inspiring demonstrations against the government in the Netherlands and Belgium and fear of its spread has led the government in Egypt to ban the sale of the vests.
