ICE is undertaking a campaign to terrorize migrant organizers. It has been targeting and arresting immigrant activists across the country.
Organizers targeted in 2018 include:
- Ravi Ragbir, director of the New Sanctuary Coalition;
- Daniela Vargas, arrested in Mississippi after speaking to the press to denounce the arrests of her brother and father;
- Claudia Rueda, detained after advocating for the release of her mother;
- Maru Mora-Villalpando, a nationwide immigrant rights leader.
ICE’s campaign of coordinated suppression of the constitutionally protected speech of immigrants is not limited to individuals. It has also targeted groups like Migrant Justice, the Vermont-based, predominantly migrant, dairy workers collective. Migrant Justice has suffered arrests of dozens of leaders and members over the years, in response to successful organizing campaigns and events.
The United States government demands immigrant communities subordinate themselves, but Migrant Justice has rejected those demands.
