President Trump says ISIS has been “defeated” and US troops are being withdrawn from Syria.
Both the Pentagon and the White House statement said the US had started “returning United States troops home as we transition to the next phase of this campaign.”
Some 2,000 troops are stationed in north-eastern Syria and military officials wanted to keep troops in Syria.
The announcement took some officials by surprise. A few days ago, Brett McGurk, suggested the US military would stay on the ground in these areas.
The Republican senator, Lindsey Graham from South Carolina, a usual Trump ally, tweeted the withdrawal “would be a huge Obama-like mistake.”
