Bolsonaro Gives Agriculture Ministry Power Over Indigenous Land

Brazil’s new far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, gave the Ministry of Agriculture power over lands inhabited by Indigenous peoples. The Ministry has strong connections to Brazil’s farm sector, the new power shift has many worried it will lead to the exploitation of the Indigenous population and bring environmental disaster to the region.

While campaigning, Bolsonaro said the lands that are currently banned to protect the Amazon should be opened to commercial activity.

The leader of Articulação dos Povos Indígenas do Brasil (APIB), Sônia Bone Guajajara, representing hundreds of Brazilian Indigenous groups, called on the EU to impose trade sanctions on Brazil to avoid an ecological disaster and potential genocide of Indigenous populations.
