Frank Magnitz, chairman of Germany’s far-right AfD party, was severely beaten in the city center of Bremen, Germany on Monday, his party has said.
He is believed to have been beaten by three alleged assailants in the street in what police said was probably a politically motivated attack after leaving a New Year’s reception.
The AfD said Magnitz was knocked out and received several blows to the head. Describing the attack as a ‘politically-motivated attempted assassination.’
He was saved after a builder reportedly intervened and chased off the suspects.
Images posted to Facebook and twitter show Magnitz lying in a hospital bed with a gaping head wound. He remains in hospital in a serious condition, a party spokesman said.
