Thousands of garment workers demonstrated for better wages for a fourth day, shutting down factories in the capital of Bangladesh. Police attacked demonstrators with batons, water cannons and fired tear gas. One protester was fatally shot and more than three dozen were injured by police during demonstrations.
Workers have been demanding higher minimum pay for months, workers want about $191 a month. The country’s garment industry generates about $30 billion in exports a year, making it the second largest in the world.
