Estimates put the number of damaged and destroyed speed cameras at around 2,000, more than 60% of all speed cameras in France. The demonstrations movement were sparked over fuel tax increases, and quickly spread throughout the country and expanded well beyond simply anger over the tax increase.
The yellow vest movement has seen protesters blocking roads and taking over toll booths. Many protesters see the speed cameras as an extension of the extortionary, revenue-generating theft that takes money from the poor.
Devices have been “neutralized, attacked, or destroyed” by members of the protest movement. The destruction could cost the government more than 50 million euro a month in revenue.
