The 26 richest people were hoarding $1.4 trillion last year, equal to the wealth of the 3.8 billion poorest people on earth, or half the population, according to a recent Oxfam report. Billionaires grow $2.5 billion richer every day, while the poorest half of the planet sees its wealth plummet.
The study found that 3.4 billion people are living on less than $5.50 a day, and 736 million cope with extreme poverty, characterized as living on less than $1.90 a day.
Of those 736 million facing extreme poverty in 2015, 368 million lived in just 5 countries: India, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, and Bangladesh. Another 347 million facing extreme poverty live in Asia and the Pacific.
