The US announced it is pulling out of a nuclear arms treaty with Russia, arms control experts are concerned the decision will open the door to an arms race. The US says it should not be constrained by a deal Moscow is violating, while Russia accused the US of resisting attempts to resolve the dispute.
The arms treaty was seen by US military strategists as an obstacle to confronting China, preventing the US from deploying weapons against China.
In a written statement, Donald Trump said, “We cannot be the only country in the world unilaterally bound by this treaty, or any other.”
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Russia will be notified Saturday that the US is withdrawing from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. Starting Saturday, the US will suspend its obligations under the treaty.
US officials dismissed concerns that ending the treaty will trigger an arms race. US officials have emphasized their fear of China, suggesting the US may deploy treaty noncompliant missiles in Asia.
