A group of scientists is calling for a ban on the development of autonomous weapons. The group said weapons controlled by artificial intelligence may malfunction unpredictably and kill innocent people. The comments were made at the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Washington DC.
89 NGOs from 50 countries formed the “Campaign to Stop Killer Robots” and are working to encourage the development of an international treaty to ban killer robots. The robots in question are not walking and talking humanoid terminator style robots, these are conventional weapons that would potentially be able to target and eliminate all human opposition instantly by unknown and unpredictable malfunctions.
Despite these latest efforts to institute bans, it is likely that autonomous weapons will dominate weapons systems of the near future.
