Union workers at Stop & Shop say the company needs to invest in workers and the community or workers will strike. Workers says the Stop & Shop parent company, Ahold Delhaize, wants to hike workers’ healthcare costs and cut pensions, as it has profited from tax cuts and spent billions buying back company stock.
“The company is looking to completely degrade the quality of life of Local 1445 members by demanding huge unnecessary concessions such as quadrupling costs of healthcare, and attacking their pensions,” wrote union officials.
At a union meeting Sunday morning, members authorized the strike as the company and labor representatives negotiate a contract. UFCW Local 1445 represents nearly 10,000 workers at Stop & Shop.
