Indigenous land rights activist Sergio Rojas was assassinated by gunmen around 11:45 pm on Monday at his home in Costa Rica, according to neighbors.
Rights groups, political parties, the Ombudsman’s Office, students, the presidency of the National Institute of Women, among others, are all demanding justice for the murdered Costa Rican Indigenous activist.
Rojas was President of the Association for the Development of the Indigenous Territory of Salitre and coordinator of the National Front of Indigenous Peoples (FRENAP) in Costa Rica.
This wasn’t the first attempt to assassinate Rojas. In 2012, the FRENAP coordinator escaped an attempted assassination.
