Trump Makes Thinly Veiled Threat Against Asylum Seekers

President Donald Trump warned that Homeland Security is being “sooo very nice, but not for long,” in a thinly veiled threat aimed at asylum seekers. The tweet was sent out yesterday, after other recent Trump threats to close the US/Mexico Border and amid extreme public outrage over images of asylum seeking families being imprisoned in cages under a bridge in El Paso.

“The Democrats are allowing a ridiculous asylum system and major loopholes to remain as a mainstay of our immigration system,” Trump wrote. “Mexico is likewise doing NOTHING, a very bad combination for our Country. Homeland Security is being sooo very nice, but not for long!”

He did not clarify what being “sooo very nice” meant or what it would mean when they stop being nice. Trump deployed the US military and recently declared a national emergency at the nation’s border. On Friday, he threatened to close the southern border altogether.

Trump also directed the State Department to end humanitarian aid to three Central American countries where many of the refugees originate.
