A new report exposes the corporations profiting from the prison industrial complex. Worth Rises, a non-profit advocacy organization, has issued a report in an effort to make it harder for prison profiteers to operate in the shadows without scrutiny.
The report includes a database of 3,900 companies in 12 different sectors that profit from the prison industry. Different companies provide services ranging from healthcare and food services, to companies that supply the prison commissary.
Worth Rises is a non-profit advocacy organization that aims to “dismantle the prison industrial complex and end the exploitation of those it touches,” according to the group’s website.
The US government spends more than $40 billion a year to pay thousands of companies that profit from the prison industrial complex and have a vested interest in more and more people being locked in cages.
According to a Worth Rises press release, the report reveals a rapid commercialization around the incarceration industry. The database was first published last year, listing 3,100 corporations profiting. The April 30th update adds another 800 corporations to the list.
