Riot cops attacked and arrested yellow vest protesters who gathered in the center of Brussels for an unauthorized rally, local media reported on Sunday.
Footage on social media shows Belgian police attacking protesters with tear gas and batons.
Calls for Sunday’s demonstration circulated for weeks on social media. Hundreds of yellow vest demonstrators followed the call. Brussels police spokeswoman, Ilse Van de Keere, said around 350 people were briefly detained, but were released and about 20 people were arrested.
The Yellow Vest movement started in France in mid-November over a fuel tax hike, corruption of government and growing wealth inequality. The yellow vest movement quickly spread to other countries, including Belgium.
