Heavy Rains in Japan Force Evacuation Orders to More Than 1 Million People

Evacuation orders in southwestern Japan come as Kyushu and neighboring regions have struggled to absorb persistent heavy rains that started last week.

Evacuation orders have been issued to more than 1.1 million people in the Kyushu region, according to NHK News.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, around half of the Kyushu region is under a warning or advisory for risks of landslides and floods.

“Please take action to protect your lives,” Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Wednesday, according to The Japan Times.

Some areas in the region have already surpassed record rainfall levels, with still more rain forecasted.
